  1. Get 1 kg rohu fish
  2. Take 2-3 potatoes
  3. Make ready 2 medium sized tomatoes
  4. Make ready 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
  5. Get 200 ml mustard oil
  6. Make ready 1 tbsp red chilli powder
  7. Prepare 1 tsp turmeric powder
  8. Take 2 tbsp coriander powder
  9. Get 1 tsp black pepper powder
  10. Get 3 tbsp mustard powder
  11. Get 1/2 cup onion paste
  12. Make ready 2 tbsp garlic paste
  13. Make ready For frying fish:
  14. Take 1 tsp turmeric powder
  15. Take 1 tsp red chilli powder
  16. Make ready 1/2 tsp salt

Hilsa fish is commonly known as 'Ilish maachh' in Bengal. It is the most popular and costly fish due its aroma and taste. "Hilsa in Mustard Gravy" is authentic Bengali dish, when i tried it in my Kitchen,I found it so easy to cook. Else you can just make it with mustard seed paste, curd, or with Eggplant. Even there is a huge divide between Bangal and Ghatis in terms of Cooking procedure.

Steps to make Fish in mustard gravy:
  1. Wash and drain fish.Add red chilli powder,turmeric powder and salt.
  2. Heat 100 ml oil and and fry fish in two batches.Take out and keep aside.
  3. Heat remaining oil in the same pan,add onion and garlic paste.Saute fot 10 seconds.Add 1tbsp water and cook on low flame for 1 minute.
  4. Add remaining spices and cook for 4-5minutes. Add chopped tomatoes and salt.Add potatoes and cook till done.
  5. Adjust gravy,add fried fish.Cook for 3-4minutes.
  6. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
  7. Serve with hot boiled rice.
