Normally with dhuli urad dal (white urad split), we make maa ki dal, Dahi vada, idli-dosa batter, bedmi poori, or urad dal ki puri, and laddu. A north Indian style spicy urad dal or black lentil dal that comes together quickly.

Steps to make Urad Dal Sweet Appam:
  1. Soak urad dal and rice for 5-6 hours. Wash well and grind them to a thick paste/ batter.
  2. Keep the batter for 8 hours to undergo fermentation.
  3. After fermentation add salt, jaggery, coconut, cardamom powder and mix well.
  4. Preheat the appam maker and grease the moulds with little ghee.
  5. Now fill the moulds with batter mix by the help of a spoon. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes on a low flame.
  6. When the appam turns golden brown from beneath, flip the side. Cover and cook for 2 more minutes. See that the appam gets golden brown from both the sides.
  7. Take out the appam from the moulds and prepare similar appam with rest of the batter mix.
  8. Serve the delicious urad dal sweet appam hot garnished & sticked with coconut cubes.

Nutritious and perfect for dinner with family or friends. Urad dal is sold in different forms in Indian stores or online. You have the split white lentil that's most commonly available and used, and this works fine in this recipe. Grind them separately to a smooth paste and keep in different containers.
