Steps to make Paruppu Masiyal / Paruppu Kadaiyal / Dal Tadka:
  1. Wash and soak the moong dal for 30 mins.
  2. In a pressure cooker add moong dal, turmeric powder,castor oil and required water. Cook for 5 whistles.
  3. In a currypan, add oil. Once oil gets heat add mustard seeds to splutter. Then add asafoetida.
  4. Add onions,curry leaves and dry red chillies. Saute till onions becomes translucent.
  5. Then add tomatoes. Keep the flame low and saute for 5 mins.
  6. Add the cooked dal with that water. Then add garlic,chilli powder and salt. If required add some more water. Cover with a lid and cook for 15mins in medium flame.
  7. Atlast add grated coconut mix well. Switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.
  8. Serve with hot rice topped with some ghee.

This recipe uses Toor dal, which is also known as Arhar or Toovar dal. The dal is seasoned with variety of spices which Let dal mix well with the seasoning / Tadka/Thaalippu.
